CASE STUDY
When a world-class research organization faces infrastructure end-of-life risk, the stakes extend far beyond IT and can impact innovation, security, and scientific progress. With hundreds of systems approaching obsolescence, it takes more than a migration plan. It requires a strategic partner to lead the transformation.
As Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 neared end-of-life, the firm’s Infrastructure Operations team was tasked with migrating 150–200 systems to modern, supported platforms. The challenge wasn’t just scale; it was also expertise. The organization required a seasoned Linux leader who could drive both execution and strategy. Success meant fully eliminating unsupported systems, strengthening security posture, and reducing long-term operational burden through modernization and containerization, all while minimizing disruption across a highly complex environment.
Maverick Technology Partners delivered the required expertise through a Senior Linux Engineer. This trusted consultant, within the organization since 2019, acted as both technical lead and strategic advisor, guiding the firm through a comprehensive modernization effort. Leveraging deep experience in Linux systems, platform lifecycle management, and infrastructure design, the migration from RHEL 7 to RHEL 9 was led while identifying opportunities to containerize workloads for greater long-term efficiency. This approach combined hands-on execution with proactive stakeholder engagement to ensure alignment across infrastructure, security, and application teams. By balancing technical precision with clear communication, progress was accelerated while maintaining stability and compliance. Where possible, applications were containerized to create portable, isolated environments that simplify future updates. For systems not suited to containerization, standardized lift-and-shift migrations were implemented to harden RHEL 9 virtual machines, ensuring consistency, security, and reliability across the environment.
Beyond successfully migrating critical Linux systems, the research organization now benefits from a modernized infrastructure that is more secure, resilient, and easier to maintain. Containerized workloads have simplified future upgrades, reduced operational complexity, and minimized downtime, while standardized RHEL 9 environments have improved consistency across the enterprise. Through collaboration and knowledge transfer, Maverick also strengthened the client's internal capabilities, empowering its team to confidently support and scale the environment long after the migration was complete.
